Atwater Village was developed in the 1920's as a residential area for workers at the Department of Water and Power substation located nearby.
Atwater Village had been known as the areas of Tropico and Walnut Grove. It was renamed after Harriet Atwater Paramour, one of the first housing developers.

The property on Los Feliz Blvd. which now houses Costo, Toys R Us, and Best Buy was initially the site of the Theodore Payne Foundation, now locate in Sun Valley and specializing in native plants. The Payne Foundation sold the property to the Franciscan Pottery Company which was a local landmark for many years.

Atwater Village formerly housed the Samoan Consulate on Madera Ave., as well and a Safeway Market and Beaches Market on Glendale Blvd. Other landmarks include the Tam O"Shanter Inn, EATS Diner, and the Hyperion Bridge.
